I would describe myself as an approachable, personable and dedicated professional who cares for the people I work with. My aim is to create a fun and relaxed environment for my clients, conducive to training hard and achieving results. I am a retired amateur rugby player and have enjoyed a variety of team sports, but now, I seem to have fallen into being a “runner”. I say “runner” because I do not class myself as a typical runner, who is tall, lean and can elegantly glide along any terrain making it look effortless. I am anything but this and would also say I am not addicted to running or exercise, I will quiet happily put my feet up instead. However, I do respect and appreciate the benefits that these two things have on my physical and mental health. Therefore, I use running and exercise to help keep me ‘in check’ (mentally and physically), to be ready for day-to-day life and the additional challenges I give myself along the way.
I love to explore, and running is one way that allows me to see new parts of the country. For me, it is not times and PBs that drive me, but the chance to see new parts of the country (in particular the South West coast line) in the most ridiculous way possible. Whether its running throughout the night in a gruelling 100 mile race or battling with weather warnings whilst running 4 ultras in 4 days, it is - quite simply - the challenge of something new, and the buzz of not knowing if it is possible that inspires me. So, my mantra is to plan well, train hard and live out the ‘what if’. In doing so, I have made mistakes along the way but have used them as a learning opportunity. For example, I have found that strength training and conditioning were key elements in being able to increase my speed and run more efficiently with less injuries thus making the process, adventure and goal more enjoyable!
Lots of people assume I must live a certain way or eat a specific diet (which, don’t get me wrong, I do to a certain extent) but, I strongly believe that all of this should come in balance. Therefore, I still enjoy the usual things such as socialising, travelling, motorbiking, drinking craft beer, watching movies, baking cakes and then eating said baked cakes. The more you run, the more you can eat cake ;)
The journey I have been on to get to where I am now, personally and professionally, has definitely shaped my approach to my work and life.
After graduating from the University of Bath with a first in Sport and Exercise Science, I went on to teach at Petroc College in Barnstaple, North Devon. Alongside teaching across BTEC, A level & fitness courses, I implemented new conditioning programs for a variety of the college’s sports academies (rugby, football, volleyball, netball & basketball).
This allowed me to see first-hand how functional conditioning, injury prevention and physical literacy helped with sporting performance within a young group of athletes. Within this time, I became a qualified level 3 personal trainer, level 2 strength & conditioning coach and qualified sports massage therapist.
Since leaving teaching in 2012, I worked as a massage therapist whilst on two winter seasons in France and Italy. During my time in the mountains, I saw the demands of winter sports and how people were often unprepared for their week’s skiing/boarding and, as a result, have specialised in training clients to be physically prepared for these snowy adventures. Since returning to England, I have been based in Bristol building my own fitness and massage company in Clifton. I work closely with physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors as well as other trainers to ensure my clients have the best support to achieve their goals.
With over ten years of experience in the industry across fitness & massage, I have a vast understanding of the day-to-day stressors of modern-day life and how they impact on training and the body. Thus, a realistic, flexible and individual approach is essential to gain successful results. One size certainly does not fit all therefore I ensure I take time to get to know each client and personalise a training plan that works for them. This can then be adjusted to meet the needs of their lifestyle as they progress.
